Overview

Department of Applied Sciences thrives to accomplish its goal to develop world class engineers by providing a strong foundation in basic Sciences and Humanity courses. With an orientation of interdisciplinary teaching of fundamental courses in Science & Engineering such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Communication skills, the department has also enriched its curriculum by introducing courses such as Critical thinking, Creative thinking, Tinker lab which are essential to develop an all-round personality with innovative and creative mind. The department has 04 well-equipped laboratories for the first-year students.

The teaching faculty of the department possess rich research experience in the various fields of Science, Engineering and Management. The teaching faculty of the department have received Research grants/fellowships from reputed funding agencies such as DST, SERB, UGC-DAE, DRDO, MHRD, Govt. of India etc. Department has 03 major research laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for materials synthesis and characterization. The main research domains of the department are Composite Materials, Condensed Matter Physics, Energy storage/conversion devices, Wastewater treatment, Mathematical modelling of fluid flow, non-linear waves, Numerical techniques, Nanotechnology, Thin film Physics, Biofluid Mechanics, Electroosmosis, Nanofluids, Heat and Mass Transfer, Singular Perturbation Boundary Value Problems, Spline Methods. Online Session on “Connecting with Traditional Practices” under NEP SAARTHI Initiative

4 March 2026

Department of Applied Sciences, Symbiosis Institute of Technology, Pune organized an online session on “Connecting with Traditional Practices” on 4th March 2026 as part of the NEP SAARTHI initiative to introduce students to the richness of the Indian Knowledge System.
The session was delivered by Dr. Sucheta Paranjape, a distinguished scholar of Sanskrit and Vedic studies, who shared insights into Vedic concepts, the Rigveda, and the scientific knowledge embedded in ancient Indian texts, including references to metallurgy, technology, and learned scholars such as Yajnavalkya and Gargi.
The session concluded with an interactive discussion, inspiring students to appreciate India’s traditional knowledge and its relevance to modern science.




National Science Day Celebration

The Department of Applied Sciences, Symbiosis Institute of Technology (SIT), Pune, celebrated National Science Day 2026 with great enthusiasm and intellectual vibrancy. The event brought together distinguished speakers, faculty members, research scholars, and students to celebrate the spirit of scientific inquiry and innovation.

The celebration featured inspiring talks by eminent personalities from academia and industry:

  • Mr. Prasad Deshpande, ICF Certified Leadership Coach and Entrepreneur, motivated students to cultivate an innovative mindset and leadership skills essential for future scientists and engineers.
  • Mr. Surinder Pal Singh, Group Technical Head at Forbes Marshall, shared valuable insights on industry expectations, professional attitude, and skills required for engineers to succeed in the modern workplace.
  • Dr. Pankaj Poddar, Principal Scientist, Material Science Division at CSIR–National Chemical Laboratory, delivered an engaging lecture connecting ancient Indian scientific wisdom with modern scientific discoveries, highlighting the timeless relevance of India’s scientific heritage.

A key highlight of the event was the felicitation of students for their national and international achievements, recognizing their outstanding contributions and encouraging them to pursue excellence in research and innovation.

Career Essentials Program for First-Year B.Tech Students

5-7 January 2026

The Department of Applied Sciences, SIT–Pune successfully organized a Career Essentials Course for First Year B.Tech students from 5th to 7th January 2026, aimed at nurturing aptitude and essential professional skills at the very beginning of their academic journey. It is required to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry expectations by systematically developing employability skills, career readiness, and adaptability needed for future workplaces.

The three-day program saw enthusiastic participation from over 700 students and featured seven expert trainers who delivered engaging and insightful sessions on key career-building themes, including:

  • Empathy and Positive Psychology in the Workplace

Department of Applied Sciences Successfully Conducted AICTE–ATAL FDP on “Electrochemical Energy Storage: Materials and Devices”

17–22 November 2025

The Department of Applied Sciences, Symbiosis Institute of Technology (SIT), Pune, successfully organized a six-day AICTE–ATAL Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on “Electrochemical Energy Storage: Materials and Devices” from 17th to 22nd November 2025. The FDP brought together distinguished academicians, industry experts, research scholars, and faculty members to explore emerging advancements in battery technologies, sustainable energy materials, and electrochemical device engineering.

The FDP aimed to build capacity in the fast-evolving domain of energy storage by offering a balanced blend of:

  • Expert lectures from academia and industry
  • Hands-on training modules
  • Article discussions and research reviews
  • An industrial visit to an EV-battery manufacturing unit
  • Assessment and reflection activities as per ATAL guidelines

Over the six days, participants gained exposure to cutting-edge research and practical insights on lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, solid-state electrolytes, nanostructured materials, battery recycling, and sustainable energy technologies.

  • Hands-On Training: Practical modules on complex impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, charge–discharge analysis, thermal management systems, and materials characterization.
  • Research Article Discussions: Facilitated academic dialogue on emerging global trends in electrochemical materials and storage technologies.
  • Industrial Visit: Participants visited NT Power Systems, Pune, gaining firsthand experience in EV battery solutions and manufacturing workflows.
  • Assessment & Certification: As mandated by ATAL, participants completed MCQ assessments and reflection journals.

National Science Day 2025 Celebration

Department of Applied Sciences celebrated the “National Science Day 2025” on Fri, 28 Feb, 2025. The event was meticulously organized by the Department of Applied Science, and the impeccable arrangements of the entire event was a testament to the dedication and teamwork of the faculty and staff of Department of Applied Sciences under Headship of Dr. Meena Laad. With the unwavering support of our Director Dr. Kotecha, Deputy Director Dr Nitin Khedkar and the administrative staff, the event was executed flawlessly.

The event was graced by Dr Philippe Maurin, Attaché, Science & Technology, Embassy of France, Mr Gautam Bambawale, Ex-ambassador, Former Indian Ambassador to Bhutan, Pakistan and China, Professor Emeritus, Symbiosis International University, Dr Bharat Kale, Emeritus Scientist and Director of Material Science COE at MIT World Peace University, Ex- Director and Director General of C-MET, Emeritus Scientist at CMET, Pune, and Dr Pankaj Poddar, Senior Principal Scientist, Physical & Materials Chemistry Division, CSIR- National Chemical Laboratory, Pune.

On this occasion, distinguished guest speakers delivered inspiring talks highlighting the significance of scientific research and innovation in shaping the future. The session covered key advancements in science, the importance of fostering scientific curiosity among young minds, and the role of science in addressing global challenges.

In one of the sessions of the event, various interesting and thought-provoking scientific models and research posters were presented by the engineering students and the research scholars of the department.



A session on acing GRE & TOEFL collaboration with ETS, India

The Department of Applied Sciences in collaboration with ETS, India organized a session on acing GRE & TOEFL. Ms. Asha Patel from ETS, India explained the GRE format & scoring; as well as guided students on how to maximize their scores to boost their chances at top universities. She also elucidated how these tests help in securing scholarships. In addition to the session, the students were provided access FREE prep resources & exclusive discounts on test fees.



Talk on the real-world applications of Mathematics by Dr. Ashwin Vaidya, Chair, Montclair State University, USA

It was an absolute pleasure to host Dr. Ashwin Vaidya, Chair, Department of Mathematics, Montclair State University, USA, for an engaging session with students and faculty of SIT, Pune on January 10, 2025. Dr. Vaidya delivered a fascinating talk on the real-world applications of Mathematics — from human anatomy, automobiles, and space research to arts, music, and economics. His insights on Fluid Dynamics research and the interdisciplinary nature of Mathematics left our students inspired, showcasing how Mathematics plays a vital role in solving complex global challenges.



Visit of Dr. Bhanu Sood, Deputy Chief Technologist at NASA Goddard Flight Center, USA

A distinguished scientist, Dr. Sood has been associated with us for the past five years. During his visit to SIT Pune on January 08, 2025, Dr. Sood interacted with students, encouraging them to explore the fascinating realm of Space. He also met Dr Ketan Kotecha, Director, SIT and explored possible academic and research associations.



Research Symposium organised as SPARC Initiative on the theme “Lightweight Composite Materials and Their Applications”

Department of Applied Sciences along with Department of Mechanical Engineering successfully organized a symposium on “Lightweight Composite Materials and Their Applications” on December 5–6, 2024, under the Government of India’s SPARC scheme. This grant was awarded to Dr. Anirban Sur, Professor & Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Dr Meena Laad, Professor & Head, Department of Applied Sciences, at Symbiosis Institute of Technology (SIT), in collaboration with Dr Girish Kale, Director of Postgraduate Studies, School of Chemical and Process Engineering, University of Leeds, UK, and Dr. Yury Razoumny, Dean, School of Engineering, RUDN University, Moscow. The symposium was attended by 30 participants. Special talks were presented by distinguished speakers, including Dr.Pankaj Poddar, Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-NCL, Dr. Vivek Gaba, NIT, Raipur, Dr. Dibakar Rakshi, IIT Delhi, Dr. Baadiga Ramu, IIT Indore, Dr. Dinkeshsingh Thakur, DIAT, Pune, Dr. Vijay Jatti, Bennett University, Noida, Dr. Sanjay Darvekar, GVP College of Engineering, Visakhapatnam. The symposium served as a platform to bring together esteemed academics, scientists, and researchers, showcasing cutting-edge advancements and innovative applications in lightweight composites. Participants shared their research and explored novel ideas in this rapidly evolving domain.



Seminar on IPR and Patent Filing

A seminar on IPR and Patent filing was organized as an activity for Events 2024 - Seminar. This activity took place on October 22, 2024 from 3 pm to 4pm in the 4th floor seminar hall. The faculty and research students from the Applied Science Department attended the seminar.
Dr. Anand Shindikar (Associate Professor, and Head IPR, SCRI, Symbiosis International (Deemed University) was invited as a resource person.



Interactive Session with Mr. Ajit Pingle (Senior Director - TIAA Global Capabilites)

Department of Applied Sciences had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Ajit Pingle, for an insightful interaction with our first-year computer engineering students on October 08, 2024 at Symbiosis Institute of Technology, Pune. The session was on the various domains where the students should explore more in the rapidly evolving field of computer engineering and Technology. Through engaging discussions and hands-on activities, Mr. Pingle beautifully explained the importance of team dynamics and how collaboration plays a crucial role in real-world projects.





An interdisciplinary lecture series (IDLS) for the first-year students by Department of Applied Sciences

The Department of Applied Sciences at Symbiosis Institute of Technology, Pune, organized an interdisciplinary lecture series (IDLS) for the first-year students. The series began on September 6, 2024 with a lecture on ‘Creativity and Engineering’ by Dr. Ketan Kotecha, Director SIT Pune. The second lecture was taken by ETS India on September 12, 2024 on ‘TOEFL-iBT, GRE Preparation & Tills-Skill Development’. The third lecture was taken by Mr. Nikhilesh Kulkarni on September 24, 2024. He is the Director, Capgemini Engineering. He spoke on the topic ‘Boost your career’. The 4th lecture was taken by Dr. Joanna M. Millunchick, Dean, Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering. She spoke on ‘Intelligent Systems’.

Mathletes club of Department of Applied Sciences conducted a “Sudoku Making and Solving” activity for ENTC students 6 September 2024. The event was a perfect blend of puzzle creation and solving, showcasing your amazing skills and passion for logical thinking.

The Department of Applied Sciences at Symbiosis Institute of Technology, Pune, recently hosted a five-day National-level Faculty Development Program (FDP) focusing on Energy Storage Materials & Technology. This FDP, facilitated by the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research, Chandigarh, designated SIT as its Remote Centre, with support from the Symbiosis Teaching Learning Resource Centre. Drawing participants from all the Engineering disciplines from SIT, totaling 36 attendees, the event featured insightful sessions led by subject matter experts. This marked the second interdisciplinary National Level FDP organized by the Applied Science Department by the initiatives of Prof. (Dr.) Meena Laad, the Head of the Department.
The Department of Applied Science expresses its gratitude for all the support that it received from SIT, STLRC and SIU and thank all the 36 attendees for theirs enthusiastic participation and making this a successful event.

Induction Programme @ SIT


The Induction programme is designed to instil a holistic approach in students towards life and develop a broader understanding of the way ahead. SIT holds a strong ethos in nurturing good human beings who can perform well professionally at their organizations and also participate meaningfully in the society. The programme helps students in embracing other cultures and live together in harmony. Our programme truly replicates the motto-“Vasudhaiva kutumbakam”.
The students are introduced to the institute, varied departments, clubs, the faculty, staff at the institute as well as briefed about rules and regulations, policies, vision and mission of the university and the institute. A whole range of varied activities are planned, conducted and executed well for the students. The activities range from lectures by eminent speakers, sports, cultural activities, club-specific activities, zumba, yoga, dance, music, literary activities, TED talks, session on universal human values, gender sensitization, professional ethics, communication skills, personality development, entrepreneurial activities, first aid-session, green initiative, familiarization with varied philosophies, Indian epics, classics, city tour, industrial visit, creative activities, skill-building activities, fine arts workshops, fun games, happy street etc.
The aim is to focus on the over-all development of the students who are the future of the Nation and develop their potential in all aspects; so as to make them employable and industry ready.

Dr. Kuldeep Mishra served as a member of the organizing team for the One-Day Online Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on “Need of Recycling of Spent Lithium-Ion Batteries”, conducted on 12 December 2025 from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM in online mode. The programme was organized by the Symbiosis Teaching Learning Resource Centre (STLRC), Symbiosis International (Deemed University) in collaboration with Symbiosis Institute of Technology, Pune. During the FDP, Dr. Mishra also delivered an expert lecture on “Green recycling approaches for recycling of spent Lithium-Ion Batteries,” sharing insights on sustainable and environmentally benign recycling strategies and their relevance to emerging energy storage technologies.

Dr. Vaidya delivered a fascinating talk on the real-world applications of Mathematics — from human anatomy, automobiles, and space research to arts, music, and economics. His insights on Fluid Dynamics research and the interdisciplinary nature of Mathematics left our students inspired, showcasing how Mathematics plays a vital role in solving complex global challenges.

The Applied Science department at SIT welcomed Dr. Amar Kishor, a renowned expert in nature-inspired optimization, to simplify these concepts for the students. The main goal of the lecture was to provide students with a fundamental understanding of nature-inspired optimization techniques.

A forum for interaction between the industry experts and first year students was created to prepare the students with required skills and be mentored by industry experts. The first session was held on Dec. 18, 2020 with distinguished speaker Mr. Jayant Natu, Senior Executive, Trigo India interacted with first year students.

The talk on Space materials was organized by distinguished Professor Dr Kenneth Stanton, Dept. of Material Science, University College, Dublin, Ireland for the First Year students.

A lecture on Cosmology by Prof. Subir Sarkar

A lecture on Cosmology: The Dark matter by eminent scientist Dr Subir Sarkar from Oxford University, UK was organised on May 16, 2022 under Great Talks series organized by the British Council. Prof. Subir Sarkar is an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and TIFR, Mumbai. In 2017 he was awarded the prestigious Homi Bhabha Award for his distinguished work in Astrophysics.

Prem Barot Excels in International Drone Racing Competitions

Prem Barot from Applied Sciences achieved 3rd place internationally and 1st place nationally at the International Drone Racing League (IDRL) during IIT Bombay Techfest 2025. Earlier, he secured 1st place at the National Drone Racing League at IIT Jodhpur Prometeo 2023 and 3rd place at the IDRL competition at IIT Gandhinagar. He also represented in the Asia Drone Championship in Singapore, gaining valuable international exposure.
His achievements reflect exceptional technical skills, consistency, and passion for drone technology. SIT congratulates Prem and wishes him continued success.


Student Achievements in Certifications and Professional Development

Students of Department of Applied Sciences continue to demonstrate academic excellence and a strong commitment to professional development by successfully completing internationally recognized certifications and industry internships in emerging technological domains.
Ishaan Rajeev Chand (AIML-B) successfully completed certifications in Generative AI, Machine Learning, Leadership Skills, and Soft Skills from prestigious platforms including Google Cloud, Stanford Online, IIM Ahmedabad, and IBM, strengthening both his technical and leadership capabilities.
Dharmit Kunal Shah (CSE-A) earned certifications in Generative AI and Machine Learning from IBM, Stanford Online, and the University of London, along with gaining valuable industry experience through internships at Prodigy Infotech and Scaler.



Participation in the 6th SciTech Forum on Space Engineering and Operations Support

The Department of Applied Sciences proudly marks its active participation in the 6th SciTech Forum on Space Engineering and Operations Support, held from December 2–4, 2025, in Moscow, Russia.
A total of 12 students from Applied Sciences, including 4 Research Scholars, represented the institution at this prestigious international forum. The participants presented their research articles covering diverse interdisciplinary themes related to space engineering, operational support systems, and applied scientific innovations under the mentorship and supervision of Dr Meena Laad, Head, Dept. of Applied Sciences.
Their participation provided an excellent platform for academic exchange, exposure to global research trends, and interaction with international experts and researchers. The event significantly contributed to enhancing the research orientation, scientific communication skills, and global outlook of the students and research scholars, reflecting the department’s strong commitment to research excellence and international academic engagement.


Development of “MyClass@SIT” App

A team of students from B.Tech. I year, Dewashish Hemant Lambore, Dhriti Manpurkar, Advika Bhosle and Revanth Sai Sreerangam, developed a smart class nevigation app “MyClass@SIT”. This app provides information about time-table, class-room location, associated faculty members etc.


Babaji Ghule, Ph.D scholar working under the supervision of Dr Meena Laad successfully defended his Ph.D thesis and awarded doctorate on 18th July 2024.



Pankhuri Varshneya, Reeti Agarwal from First Year B.Tech CSE to present a paper titled "Quantum Computing Odyssey: Teleporting to the Realm of Unparalleled Possibilities" and Ratan Mourya FY AIML & Najeeb Sayyed TY AIML to present a paper titled " Unveiling the Vision: A Comprehensive Review of Computer Vision in AI and ML" in IEEE International Conference on Advances in Data Engineering and Computing Systems organised by Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Chennai.
